Saudi Arabia’s $500 Billion Megacity NEOM will Host Winter Games in Desert

Saudi Arabia has been chosen to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games, marking a significant milestone for the country’s burgeoning sports industry. The games will be held in Neom, a US$500 billion megacity that is currently under construction, and will feature a year-round winter sports complex. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced that the Saudi bid had been unanimously approved, making Neom the first West Asian city to host the event.

The winter games will take place in Trojena, an area within Neom that is known for its cooler temperatures, with winter temperatures dropping below zero Celsius. Trojena is expected to be completed by 2026 and will feature a range of amenities, including year-round skiing, chalets, mansions, luxury hotels, and a man-made freshwater lake. However, the area receives very little rainfall, which may pose a challenge for the games.

The decision to host the games in Neom is part of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious plans to diversify its economy and develop its tourism sector. The country has been investing heavily in sports infrastructure in recent years, with a particular focus on hosting major international events. The 2029 Asian Winter Games are expected to attract thousands of visitors to Neom, generating significant revenue for the city and helping to position Saudi Arabia as a leading destination for winter sports enthusiasts.

Overall, the selection of Neom as the host city for the 2029 Asian Winter Games is a significant achievement for Saudi Arabia and a testament to the country’s growing reputation as a hub for sports and tourism. With the completion of Trojena, the city is poised to become a major player in the winter sports industry, offering a unique and exciting destination for skiers, snowboarders, and other winter sports enthusiasts from around the world.
