Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has declared that by the end of 2023, self-driving taxis can operate on city streets. The action is a part of the government’s aim to make Dubai a smart city and less carbon-intensive.
Electric engines will power the self-driving taxis, making them environmentally benign and lowering the city’s reliance on fossil fuels. They will have cutting-edge sensors and artificial intelligence systems that will let them safely and effectively navigate the city’s highways.
To create the self-driving taxi service, the RTA has been collaborating with several top technology firms, including Cruise, a division of General Motors. The business has tested its self-driving taxis successfully in San Francisco, and Dubai will be the first city outside the US to use the technology.
The self-driving taxis will first go along predetermined routes, with qualified drivers inside to take over in an emergency. The goal is to progressively phase out the drivers as the technology advances and make the service entirely driverless.
