Sialkot Receives 512mm Rainfall in Just 48 Hours

Sialkot has been hit by one of the heaviest rainfalls in its history, with 512 millimeters recorded in just 48 hours. This extraordinary downpour caused serious urban flooding, while three major drains in the city overflowed, making the situation even worse.

Deputy Commissioner Saba Asghar confirmed the scale of the rainfall and the damage it triggered. As floodwaters spread through many areas, rescue teams moved in quickly.

Boats were used to reach stranded residents, and nine relief camps were established to provide temporary shelter. However, many locals chose not to leave their homes despite the risks, preferring to stay and protect their belongings.

The rising water also damaged protective embankments, which allowed floodwaters to spill into surrounding areas. Among the affected sites was Sialkot International Airport.

Parts of the airport were submerged, forcing authorities to temporarily suspend flight operations. Thankfully, officials reported that critical facilities, including the runway, remained unaffected and safe for future use once the water recedes.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and have assured residents that all possible measures are being taken to control the flooding and protect lives. Rescue and relief teams are working round the clock, while medical staff and emergency supplies have been dispatched to high-risk areas.

The recent rains have highlighted the urgent need for better drainage systems and stronger flood defenses in Sialkot. While the immediate priority is relief and safety, officials are also considering long-term strategies to prevent such large-scale flooding in the future.
