Signal Launches In-App Payments Feature That Uses Cryptocurrency

Users of the privacy-focused app Signal can now trade MobileCoin, a “privacy coin” directly via Signal, as per a report in Decrypt. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum are in the works, with rollouts planned in the coming months.

For quite some time, Signal has hinted at a step into the crypto room. Moxie Marlinspike, the MobileCoin network’s creator and adviser, told a news outlet,

I’d like to live in a world where you would know that not only when talking to your therapist over Signal, but also when paying your therapist for the session over Signal.

According to a landing page on the Signal Foundation website, a non-profit organization that supports the software has begun accepting donations in digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, ChainLink, and Zcash. Although there seems to be little progress in incorporating all cryptocurrencies into Signal’s mainframe, the app’s executives are confident that this may improve eventually.
