When Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren performed for 41 minutes on top of the Burj Khalifa’s 149th floor, he achieved something amazing and got two world records. But what most people don’t know is that he performed while wearing a harness. Edy Chereji, who helped create the UNTOLD music festival, explained how they carefully planned this incredible performance.
“Armin played on a rooftop terrace,” Edy said. “We had to make a special setup for him to perform there. So, for safety, we made sure he had a harness on.” This performance set records for the highest DJ performance on a building and the biggest LCD screen. While Armin played, the Burj Khalifa turned into a big LED screen that matched his music.
The setup was shaped like a letter ‘A,’ decorated with lights that went along with the music. It took many hours to design and put the setup on the 149th floor. “We had to be careful about how heavy the structure was,” Edy added. “We worked closely with engineers from Emaar. The weather was nice, with a gentle breeze. Armin had a special view of Dubai as he played.”
For two days, more than 100 technicians from different places worked really hard on the shoot. They filmed in two locations in Dubai. “On the first day, we filmed in the desert at sunset,” Edy said. “On the second day, we filmed at the Burj Khalifa after midnight. Then we did it again at sunrise. We wanted to show how beautiful Dubai looks at different times in our video.”
A special booth shaped like the letter ‘A,’ where Armin performed in the desert, was brought from the Netherlands and put in place using a big crane.
The UNTOLD music festival is famous as one of the biggest in the world. It’s going to start in Expo City Dubai in February 2024.
