Taxes on Imported Smartphones Will Now be According to the FBR List

Karachi’s Directorate-General for Customs Valuation (DGCV) has revised upward customs values for imports of various types of mobile phones from leading brands for correct assessment of customs duties and taxes.

In this regard, valuation advice for the Model Customs Collectorates was provided by the DG Valuation (MCCs).

This latest Valuation Advice has replaced the Directorate’s Valuation Advice released on October 21, 2020.

As per the Directorate, custom values for importing cell phones from the following brands have been revised:

  • Apple
  • Huawei
  • Infinix
  • Itel
  • Lenovo
  • Meizu
  • Motorola
  • Nokia
  • Oppo
  • Sony
  • Tecno
  • Vivo
  • Honor
  • Alcatel
  • Samsung

The valuation ruling claimed that, under section 25 of the Customs Act of 1969, the Directorate-General of Customs Valuation carried out an exercise to determine the assessable customs values of mobile telephony devices. It is recommended that for the calculation of duty and taxes, customs values as stated must be taken into account.

The list is not exhaustive, but it mainly includes traded brands and models given by the Importers & Manufacturers Association of Cell Phones (MPIMA).

Clearance Collectorates are advised to determine those under Section 81 of the Customs Act, I969 for the evaluation of brands and models that are manufactured in commercial quantities but are not included in the list, and then forward a referral to this Directorate-General for the final determination of their values.
