The country’s youngest mountaineer has climbed Mount Everest and is now on his way to K2, the world’s second highest peak.
Shehroze Kashif, 19, left Skardu on Saturday for Askole, where he expects to arrive at the K2 base camp location after a five-day hike.
“I’m about to embark on a 30-day trek to one of the world’s most difficult mountains. In this group of roughly five people travelling on this expedition with Summit Karakoram and a Nepalese organiser, I’m the sole Pakistani. If I succeed, God willing, I’ll be the world’s youngest climber to summit K2,” a thrilled Shehroze told Dawn over the phone from Skardu.
Shehroze became the fourth youngest mountaineer in the world when she summited Everest precisely two months ago, on May 11. The kid held the distinction of being the youngest Pakistani to climb the 8,047-meter Broad Peak at the age of 17, earning him the nickname “Broad Boy” before reaching the 8,848.86-meter peak.
