Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film has been banned in Kuwait and Lebanon due to concerns about “public ethics and social traditions.” Following Lebanon’s lead, Kuwait stopped screening the movie.
Lebanon’s culture minister, Mohammad Mortada, criticized the film for promoting homosexuality and neglecting family values. Kuwait’s Ministry for Press and Publication stated that foreign films conflicting with public ethics are usually censored. If a movie introduces unfamiliar concepts, the entire film is barred.
Despite this, Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has earned a total of $1 billion in global box office sales in just 17 days. The movie is now being shown in UAE and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Kuwait recently banned the supernatural horror movie Talk To Me.
