These Teams will Play Final if Remaining Asia Cup Matches Washed Out

Inclement weather looms over Colombo, casting uncertainty on the Super 4 matches of the Asia Cup 2023. With potential washouts, coin toss tiebreakers, and the possibility of a shared trophy, tension rises. Amidst this backdrop, the ACC’s decision to revert to the original schedule fuels controversy, with the PCB voicing concerns and the cricketing community questioning Jay Shah’s role in international cricket scheduling.

Inclement weather in Colombo, the remaining fixtures’ host city, threatens to postpone the Super 4 matches of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. On Wednesday, Pakistan began their Super 4 campaign with a decisive seven-wicket win over Bangladesh.

The remaining Super 4 matches in Colombo, however, are in doubt due to the weather. In the event of a washout, Pakistan would need only four points to advance to the final.

Tiebreaker by Coin Toss

If both matches are washed out, Sri Lanka and India will have the same number of points (3) and the same number of runs (NRR) (0). This would introduce an element of chance into the sport by having a coin flip decide which team moves on to the championship round.

Since they lost in the Super Four, Bangladesh will finish with only two points and will not advance to the championship game.

Possible Trophy Share

The Asia Cup 2023 trophy may be split among the contesting nations if the final, slated for September 17, is likewise postponed due to inclement weather.

Fans and players alike in Colombo are crossing their fingers for better weather in the next few days in order to save the tournament.

The schedule for the remaining Super 4 matches in the 2023 Asia Cup is as follows:

Sept 9 — Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh in Colombo at 2:30 pm (PST)

Sept 10 — Pakistan vs India in Colombo at 2:30 pm (PST)

Sept 12 — India vs Sri Lanka in Colombo at 2:30 pm (PST)

Sept 14 — Pakistan vs Sri Lanka in Colombo at 2:30 pm (PST)

Sept 15 — India vs Bangladesh in Colombo at 2:30 pm (PST)

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) voiced its anger and controversy after the ACC reversed course and returned to the previous schedule in Colombo.

The PCB is unhappy with the ACC’s unilateral decision and wants to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the logistical issues that will arise as a result of the change in location.

Concerns have been raised concerning the decision-making process in international cricket in light of Jay Shah’s participation in changing schedules, particularly the ICC World Cup 2023.
