UAE astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi has successfully completed half of his six-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The 42-year-old Dr. Al Neyadi embarked on this mission on March 3, marking the Arab world’s first long-duration space endeavor.

Achievements Inspiring Future Generations

The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre’s director general, Salem Al Marri, congratulated Dr. Al Neyadi on reaching this significant milestone. Al Marri praised his dedication, resilience, and strength. He also emphasized that Al Neyadi’s achievements truly exemplify the caliber of astronauts cultivated in the UAE. Al Neyadi’s consistent focus on knowledge building initiatives for future generations and his commitment to community and student outreach make him an exceptional role model.

The First Arab Astronaut to Perform a Spacewalk

The highlight of Dr. Al Neyadi’s mission thus far has been his historic spacewalk. Together with his American colleague Stephen Bowen, he ventured outside the ISS for a seven-hour spacewalk. Their tasks included vital maintenance work and preparing an area for the future installation of a solar array.

Relocation of the Dragon Capsule

Dr. Al Neyadi embarked on another space journey in which he and his colleagues traveled. This relocation allowed the Axiom 2 crew, including two Saudi astronauts, to dock at the ISS and made room for an incoming cargo spacecraft. Dr. Al Neyadi assisted Mr. Bowen and his team during this mission, displaying his adaptability and cooperation.

Scientific Contributions in Space

Dr. Al Neyadi has been actively involved in more than 200 experiments assigned by NASA and 19 others assigned by UAE universities. His research encompasses various fields, including life sciences. To monitor his cardiovascular system while working in microgravity, Dr. Al Neyadi wore a bio-monitor vest and headband, allowing ground-based scientists to study the effects of microgravity on the human heart and potentially develop therapies for heart diseases. Moreover, he assisted Saudi astronaut Rayyanah Barnawi in a space biology experiment, investigating the inflammatory response of human cell samples to microgravity.

Celebrating 42nd Birthday in Space

Dr. Al Neyadi marked his 42nd birthday with his colleagues, who have become his space family. The team surprised him with a birthday cake and other treats, making the occasion truly memorable. Sharing his joy on Twitter, Dr. Al Neyadi expressed gratitude for the gravity-defying celebration,. It included a maple muffin top cake from the US crew, a cinnamon bun with yogurt and dried fruits from the Russian crew, and heartfelt wishes in Arabic.

Return to Earth

Dr. Al Neyadi is scheduled to return to Earth in late August, concluding his time aboard the ISS. In the remaining months of his mission, he will continue his scientific investigations and engage in live calls with space enthusiasts, furthering his commitment to outreach and inspiring others with his journey.
