World’s First All-Electric Oil Tanker to Get a Massive 3.5 MWh Battery Pack

The project to build the first all-electric oil tanker is moving ahead, and a huge 3.5 MWh battery pack will be installed.

Some of the largest and most polluting vessels on the planet are oil tankers and container ships.

Comparable to millions of passenger vehicles put together, some of the world’s biggest container ships emit emissions. The heavy fuel oil they burn has a high content of sulphur, so it is an important part of the automotive industry in the world that needs to turn to battery power.

A group of Japanese companies revealed last year that they were teaming up to build the first all-electric tanker in the world.

Asahi Tanker, one of the firms has announced that it has ordered two new electric tankers and plans to bring them into service as early as March 2022 and March 2023.
