Xiaomi unveils Mi Air Charge that can charge various devices wirelessly

Mi Air Charge, a groundbreaking new wireless charging technology which can remotely charge your electronic devices within a range of several meters, has been revealed. “It’s not science fiction,” Xiaomi says in a blog post describing what it calls a “bold attempt to turn the whole house ‘truly’ wireless.” Xiaomi has reimagined everything we thought we learned about wireless charging by using a collection of proprietary hardware and is moving for a future without any cables or wireless charging stands.

Xiaomi has installed a transmitter, approximately the size of a Mi Air Purifier, equipped with five-phase interference antennas to ‘accurately’ detect the location of your cell, while another pair of 144 antennas transmits millimeter-wide waves directly to the phone by beamforming to charge it ‘over-the-air.’

In its current generation, the technology is capable of 5W remote charging within several meters of a single unit. At the same time, it can also charge several devices. But, in our view, the real ‘breakthrough’ bit is the claim that “even physical barriers do not affect the efficiency of charging.”

Xiaomi goes so far as to suggest that in the ‘near’ future, smartwatches, bracelets and other wearable devices will also be able to use Mi Air Charge and “soon our living room devices, including speakers, desk lamps and other small smart home products, will all be built on a completely cable-free wireless power supply design, making our living rooms truly wireless.”
