People can set their own rules for how their face is used. Payments range from about $15 to $700, depending on the project and how widely the face appears. Some platforms charge a small commission, while users choose what types of content are allowed.
Supporters say this gives people more control over their digital identity. It also creates a new way to earn passive income without acting or appearing on camera. Demand is high because China’s booming AI microdrama industry needs many different real-looking faces to keep content fresh and less repetitive.
However, legal experts warn of serious risks. Once biometric data like a face is shared, it becomes hard to fully control. There are concerns about long-term misuse, unauthorized face-swapping, and privacy breaches. Even with growing legal protections, preventing all future problems remains difficult.
