The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has officially declared 2024 as the hottest year ever recorded. Global temperatures have risen by a staggering 1.55°C compared to levels before the industrial era, underscoring the severe impact of climate change.
This year was marked by extreme weather events, including intense heatwaves, record-breaking ocean temperatures, and rapidly shrinking glaciers. These alarming developments highlight the worsening climate crisis. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo emphasized that every fraction of a degree matters when it comes to limiting global warming.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for stronger and more urgent climate action starting in 2025. He pointed to the devastating effects of wildfires and the unprecedented rise in ocean temperatures, which now absorb 90% of the planet’s excess heat. These conditions are clear signs of the need for immediate intervention.
The report reinforces the critical importance of meeting the targets set under the Paris Agreement. Without decisive action to limit global warming, the world risks severe consequences for ecosystems, economies, and human lives. This serves as a wake-up call for governments, businesses, and individuals to work together to protect the planet and secure a sustainable future.
