The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has put forward Lahore as the preferred venue for hosting all of India’s matches during the Champions Trophy scheduled for February 2025.
This proposal has been drafted and sent to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for their consideration and approval. The final decision regarding the venue selection will be made at the upcoming ICC Board meeting in July, which is set to take place in Sri Lanka.
Initially, the PCB had suggested Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi as potential venues for the tournament. However, after careful consideration and consultation, Lahore emerged as the preferred choice. The decision to concentrate the matches in Lahore aims to streamline logistics, ensure optimal security arrangements, and enhance the overall tournament experience for players, officials, and spectators.
PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, expressed the board’s unwavering commitment to hosting a successful tournament. He emphasized ongoing discussions with the ICC to address security concerns and implement necessary upgrades to the stadiums.
The primary focus is on creating a safe and conducive environment for players and fans alike, fostering an atmosphere of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
The proposal to host India’s matches in Lahore marks a significant development in cricket diplomacy between Pakistan and India. Bilateral cricketing relations between the two nations have been strained due to political tensions, leading to a hiatus in cricketing engagements since the 2012/13 season.
However, the PCB remains optimistic about the prospect of reviving cricketing ties through the Champions Trophy, showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship and unity transcending geopolitical boundaries.
As preparations for the Champions Trophy gain momentum, the PCB continues to work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure seamless execution and adherence to international standards. Discussions with the ICC encompass various aspects, including scheduling, broadcasting rights, ticketing arrangements, and COVID-19 protocols, to ensure a smooth and successful tournament.
