World Bank Lauds Effective Operation of Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project

The World Bank praised the successful execution and effective activity of the 1410 MW Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project, finished in 2018 in a phased way.

This has been recognized in the World Bank Implementation Support Mission Aide Memoire, lately imparted with the Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of water resources, Power Division, and Economic Affairs Division, Government of Pakistan.

A seven-part World Bank Mission was directed from December 1 to 8, 2020, to survey the status of the execution of the Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower operation. The mission involved of Energy Specialist and Mission Leader, Senior Procurement Specialist, Advisor, Social Development Specialist, Environment Specialist, projects Officer, and Programme director.

Featuring the power generation and monetary benefits of the Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower operation since commissioning, the World Bank Aide Memoire says, “Over 12, 000 Giga Watt-hours (GWh) have been created since commissioning in 2018. The worth of the power generated for the country is over US$ 1,560 million using a worth of US Cents 13/kilo Watt-hour (kWh), which is the expense of generation from Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) plants. The advantage is about double the capital expense of the operation”.

The World Bank Aide Memoire also additionally the achievement of the Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project saying, “The Project has been very effective, beginning generation on time, and with a expense about 10 percent less than the budget estimated at the time of acceptance by the Bank. This is very uncommon for hydropower operations globally.”

Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower operations of 1410 MW (more than Mangla) has been instrumental in gathering the power generation needs of Pakistan, set off socio-economic growth in the country.
