The federal government has announced plans to build a new airport in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after receiving strong support and repeated requests from overseas Pakistanis. This demand has been ongoing for many years but recently gained more attention after several British Members of Parliament, who have Kashmiri roots, raised the issue.
These British MPs wrote directly to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, highlighting how important it is to have an airport in AJK. They explained that it would make travel much easier for members of the Pakistani diaspora, especially those who frequently visit family or conduct business in the region.
In response to this growing demand, the Airports Authority has now taken the first step toward the airport project. They have published an advertisement inviting qualified consultancy firms to submit their proposals. These firms will help plan and guide the construction process, following official rules and regulations.
At the same time, the first annual Overseas Pakistanis Convention is being held in Islamabad. This event brings together Pakistanis living abroad to discuss their concerns, share ideas, and strengthen their connection with the country.
