Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described the newly signed Makkah Defence Agreement as a continuation and expansion of the longstanding defence cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
He said the agreement builds upon the bilateral defence pact signed by the two countries last year and further strengthens their strategic security partnership.
Speaking about the agreement, the prime minister emphasized that the trilateral defence arrangement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye is entirely defensive in nature. He said the agreement is designed to promote regional peace, security and stability rather than facilitate aggression against any country.
According to Shehbaz, the cooperation reflects a shared commitment to protecting regional interests and creating an environment conducive to economic growth and prosperity.
Shehbaz Sharif also expressed appreciation for the role played by Field Marshal Asim Munir in helping secure the agreement. He praised the military leadership for strengthening Pakistan’s defence relationships with key regional partners and advancing cooperation in areas related to security and strategic preparedness.
The prime minister further highlighted the special relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, particularly the religious and cultural significance attached to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. He said Pakistan’s armed forces consider it an honour to stand alongside Saudi forces in safeguarding the holy sites and supporting the security of the Kingdom.
The agreement is being presented by Pakistan as part of broader efforts to enhance defence coordination and contribute to regional stability. Shehbaz said the cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye should be viewed as a mechanism for strengthening collective security and peace, rather than as a move directed against any particular state.
He added that Pakistan remains committed to maintaining close ties with Saudi Arabia and other friendly countries, with the latest defence cooperation reflecting the depth of strategic relations between the two nations.
