PMD has issued a weather alert starting today, warning of intense rainfall, strong winds, and possible hailstorms in several regions across the country. This weather pattern is expected to continue until May 31, with a focus on both northern and southern areas.
Cities and towns in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir are predicted to experience heavy showers and thunderstorms, creating the potential for flash flooding and travel disruption. In addition to rain, gusty winds and hailstorms may affect daily life and infrastructure in these areas.
The PMD has called on residents to stay alert, especially during periods of dust storms and strong winds, which could damage property or create hazardous conditions for travelers. Citizens are encouraged to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during peak weather activity.
Sindh province, particularly its upper and southeastern districts, is also in line for turbulent weather. According to the forecast, cities such as Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Shahdadkot, Thar, Mithi, and Islamkot are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, possibly accompanied by lightning and thunder.
Other parts of Sindh, including Dadu, Johi, Sehwan, Nawabshah, Qazi Ahmed, Hala, Matiari, Hyderabad, and Jamshoro, have also been highlighted as areas that could see spells of rain and stormy winds during this period. The Met Office has urged local authorities to remain prepared and take precautionary steps to handle potential emergencies.
This morning, the temperature readings across some major Pakistani cities were as follows:
- Islamabad: 24°C
- Lahore: 29°C
- Karachi: 30°C
- Peshawar: 27°C
- Quetta: 26°C
- Gilgit: 16°C
- Murree: 15°C
- Muzaffarabad: 20°C
The changing weather isn’t limited to Pakistan. The PMD also released a forecast for Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), where partly cloudy conditions with a chance of rain and thunderstorms are expected in cities like Srinagar, Jammu, Leh, Pulwama, Anantnag, Shopian, and Baramula.
Morning temperatures in these areas were relatively cool:
- Srinagar, Baramula, Pulwama: 12°C
- Jammu: 26°C
- Leh: 3°C
- Anantnag and Shopian: 13°C
With the weather turning unpredictable, the PMD recommends that people remain cautious, especially in areas vulnerable to heavy downpours and winds. The department is keeping a close watch on the evolving weather patterns and will continue to update the public as necessary.
As the country braces for several days of wet and windy conditions, residents are urged to plan ahead, stay informed, and prioritize safety.
