US Lifts Ban on Student Visas with This New Rule

US has resumed processing student and exchange visas after a brief pause but with a new requirement in place. All foreign students applying for educational (F), vocational (M) or exchange (J) visas will now need to make their social media profiles public as part of the visa screening process.

The U.S. State Department has instructed its embassies and consulates to begin scheduling interviews again, but under stricter guidelines. As part of a more detailed background check, consular officers will now review the online activity of applicants through their public social media accounts.

Students who do not unlock their profiles or restrict access to their online presence may face delays or even denials, as officials may interpret privacy settings as an attempt to hide information.

The new rule is aimed at strengthening the visa review process and ensuring all applicants are fully screened before entering the country.

The updated procedure comes as part of broader efforts by U.S. authorities to tighten security, particularly in sensitive areas like education and research. In the past, students from certain countries particularly China were subjected to additional screening due to political and economic tensions.

Officials say this measure will apply equally to all nationalities and is designed to enhance transparency and safeguard U.S. interests.

While the decision has raised concerns among some privacy advocates, the State Department believes it is a necessary step to balance openness with national security.

Foreign students planning to study in the U.S. are advised to prepare their digital profiles accordingly before applying.
