Abdul Raffay Wins First Ever Gold for Pakistan at Science Olympiad

Pakistan has made a proud mark on the global stage by winning its first-ever gold and bronze medals at the 2025 International Science Olympiads. This historic achievement shows the growing strength of science education in the country.

Abdul Raffay Paracha, a student from Siddique Public School, won a gold medal at the 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) held in the Philippines. At the same time, Daniyal Shahzad Hamid from The Science School in Rawat brought home a bronze medal from the 55th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) held in France. These two medals are Pakistan’s first in the history of these international competitions, making this a major milestone for the nation.

These remarkable successes were made possible through the STEM Careers Programme, a special initiative led by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in partnership with the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS). The program is designed to find and support talented students in science and mathematics from across the country and prepare them for international competitions.

Both students received training and mentorship from some of Pakistan’s top scientists and educators at PIEAS. Their hard work and the expert guidance they received played a key role in helping them perform at such a high level against students from all over the world.

This achievement not only celebrates the individual brilliance of Abdul Raffay and Daniyal Shahzad but also highlights the growing efforts in Pakistan to promote science education, research, and innovation. It shows that with the right support and opportunities, Pakistani students can compete and shine on the world stage.

Education experts and government officials have praised the students and the STEM Careers Programme for bringing pride to the nation. Many believe that this success will inspire more young students in Pakistan to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and aim for excellence at the global level.

This historic moment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Pakistan in international science competitions and serves as a strong message that the country is investing in its future through science and education.
