Except for Sindh, all educational institutes would remain open, said Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood on Wednesday.
Schools in Sindh will remain closed until August 8, when the provincial government will determine whether to reopen them after monitoring the coronavirus pandemic scenario, according to the federal education minister.
“It was decided that all educational institutes will remain open across the country except Sindh with 50% attendance,” the minister told the media after chairing a meeting of provincial education ministers to assess the present Covid-19 scenario.
Exams would be held solely on elective courses, not compulsory ones, he added, adding that students will receive 5% extra marks on compulsory exams for which physical exams will not be held.
Previously, the Sindh administration was opposed to the concept of reopening schools, with Provincial Education Minister Saeed Ghani stating that educational establishments in the state would remain closed until August 8. He established, “After August 08, we will review the scenario,” he said, adding that the COVID situation in the province, particularly in Karachi, was concerning.
“The remaining intermediate part-II papers could only be taken after the situation improved,” he said, adding that they were unable to open educational institutes because of a recent surge in COVID cases in Karachi and Hyderabad.
