Pakistan Ranks 5th Among World’s Cheapest Countries for Public Transport

Pakistan has secured the fifth spot globally among the world’s most affordable countries for public transport, according to a 2025 global fare analysis that evaluated 123 countries and 319 cities.

The report highlights that the average one-way public transport ticket in Pakistan costs just Rs46, while a monthly travel pass is available for around Rs1,800. This makes Pakistan one of the most economical countries for daily commuters, especially in major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.

At the top of the list is Luxembourg, which continues to offer completely free public transport, maintaining its position as the world’s most affordable. Meanwhile, Iceland ranked as the most expensive, with high transport fares reflecting its elevated cost of living.

Analysts noted that Pakistan’s low transport fares serve as a form of economic relief for citizens amid rising inflation and fuel costs. Affordable public transport helps millions of people manage their daily expenses while keeping urban mobility accessible to all income groups.

Experts also emphasized that while the cost remains low, service improvement and safety measures should remain a national focus to ensure quality, punctuality, and comfort for commuters.

The ranking positions Pakistan favorably in terms of cost-effectiveness and accessibility, reinforcing the country’s need to further modernize its public transport infrastructure while maintaining affordability, a balance that could benefit both citizens and the economy.
