In a major development reshaping Pakistan’s military command structure, the government has approved key amendments to the Army, Air Force, and Navy Acts, officially confirming Field Marshal Asim Munir as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) until 2030.
The amendments, enacted in line with the 27th Constitutional Amendment, introduce sweeping reforms in the country’s defence administration. Among the most notable changes is the abolition of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, a position traditionally responsible for coordinating between the three armed forces.
Under the new framework, the rank of Field Marshal, along with Marshal of the Air Force and Admiral of the Fleet, has now been formally recognized within Pakistan’s military hierarchy, marking a structural shift toward consolidated leadership.
Officials clarified that the reforms also dismiss online speculation regarding the creation of new posts such as Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) or Deputy Chief of Army Staff (DCOAS). Instead, the restructuring aims to enhance strategic coordination, defence policy efficiency, and inter-service harmony under a unified command.
Analysts describe this as a landmark moment in Pakistan’s civil-military evolution, reflecting a move toward stronger centralized defence management.
With his extended tenure, Field Marshal Asim Munir is set to play a pivotal role in shaping Pakistan’s national security strategy, regional diplomacy, and long-term military modernization efforts through the end of the decade.
