Tesla is developing a special wheelchair-accessible robotaxi to make self-driving cars more inclusive. The company shared this update during a hearing at the Washington, DC City Council. Tesla’s senior policy advisor, India Herdman, confirmed that the purpose-built vehicle is actively being developed and tested in Texas.
This new robotaxi aims to help people with disabilities move around more freely. Current Tesla Cybercab and Robotaxi models are not designed for wheelchair users. The new version will solve this problem with better access features. No launch date has been announced yet.
Elon Musk has previously supported the idea. Last year, he replied “Absolutely” when asked about accessible rides on X. Tesla already added an accessibility tab in its Robotaxi app that connects users to other services while they develop their own solution.
The project shows Tesla’s focus on making autonomous transportation available to everyone. It could greatly improve daily life for wheelchair users who often face difficulties with traditional paratransit services.
Tesla’s move may encourage other companies to create more inclusive self-driving vehicles. Once launched, this wheelchair-accessible robotaxi could change urban mobility and bring more independence to millions of people with disabilities.
