Pakistan will Face 26% Wetter Monsoon in 2026, NDMA

Officials from Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have raised alarms about the upcoming 2026 monsoon season, predicting it could bring 26% more rainfall than usual. This increase in rainfall is expected to heighten the risk of floods across many parts of the country.

NDMA experts have also warned that melting glaciers and extreme heat waves could trigger glacial lake outburst floods, adding another layer of danger for communities living near rivers and mountainous regions.

Past floods have shown how severe the economic impact can be. For example, the 2022 floods caused losses equal to over 9% of Pakistan’s GDP, affecting homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a set of emergency preparedness measures. These include repairing damaged bridges and flood gates, upgrading drainage systems, and strengthening early warning networks to alert people in vulnerable areas.

Officials are also focusing on evacuation plans and community awareness campaigns to minimize damage and loss of life.

The government is urging residents in flood-prone regions to remain alert and follow guidance from local authorities. NDMA has emphasized that timely preparation and public cooperation will be critical in reducing the impact of the monsoon.

With the monsoon season approaching, authorities are working to ensure that Pakistan is better prepared this year, aiming to protect communities, save lives, and reduce economic losses from potential floods.
