Karachi is preparing to bring back double-decker buses after many years, as the city plans to introduce five diesel-powered double-decker buses and 34 electric buses in January 2026.
This move is part of efforts to improve public transport and provide better travel options for daily commuters.
The buses have been imported from China at a total cost of around Rs. 3 billion. Each double-decker bus will be able to carry between 115 and 120 passengers, helping reduce overcrowding on busy roads.
The new service is expected to operate along Shahrah-e-Faisal, running from Model Colony to Tower, one of the city’s most important and heavily used routes.
Officials from the Sindh Mass Transit Authority, along with other provincial authorities, are working on final preparations and are expected to announce a formal launch plan in the coming months. The return of double-decker buses is being seen as a major step towards reviving efficient mass transit in Karachi.
In addition to these buses, the government plans to further expand electric vehicle (EV) bus services across other routes in the city. This initiative aims to reduce pollution, cut fuel costs, and promote environmentally friendly transport solutions.
Authorities are also working on introducing automated fare collection systems to make travel easier and faster for passengers. These systems will allow commuters to pay fares digitally, improving convenience and reducing delays.
