The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new chipless CNIC featuring a secure QR code, designed to make identity verification faster, simpler and more convenient.
The new identity card uses modern security features while removing the need for an electronic chip, offering citizens a more accessible way to verify their identity through digital scanning technology.
The new CNIC is produced using durable polycarbonate material and can be scanned with compatible smartphones and the PakID app. It contains essential identity information, the cardholder’s photograph and bilingual details, along with upgraded security elements intended to strengthen the protection and verification of personal information.
The QR-based system is expected to make identity checks more efficient in situations where digital verification is required.
NADRA has started introducing the new cards from August 14, 2026. However, citizens who already hold existing CNICs do not need to replace them immediately, as current identity cards will continue to remain valid until their respective expiry dates.
The introduction of the new QR code-based CNIC represents another step toward expanding secure digital identity services and modernising Pakistan’s identification system.
