Lawyers Request to Celebrate Basant on Lahore Court’s Rooftop, Court Denied

A Lahore Sessions Court has rejected an unusual request made by a lawyer to celebrate the Basant festival on the court’s rooftop. The decision was announced by Judge Tariq Khurshid Khawaja, who explained that allowing such an event would pose serious security risks. He said that court buildings are highly sensitive places and that the rooftop is not built to host public gatherings or celebrations.

The judge emphasized that the safety of everyone connected to the court must come first, including judges, court staff, lawyers, and visitors. Because of these concerns, the request was dismissed to avoid any potential danger or disruption within the court premises.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has officially approved Basant celebrations in Lahore from February 6 to February 8, but under very strict safety rules. Only registered kites will be allowed, and they must be flown using cotton strings. The use of glass-coated, metal, or chemical strings has been completely banned due to the risk of injuries and accidents.

To enforce these rules, authorities will closely monitor kite flying using drones, control rooms, and social media tracking. Special safety measures have also been introduced in designated red zones, where motorcyclists will be required to wear helmets and use safety rods. These steps aim to ensure that Basant celebrations can take place safely while minimizing risks to the public.
