The Punjab government has announced a major new train service that will significantly reduce travel time between Lahore and Rawalpindi.
Under the new plan, a fast train will run between Lahore and Rawalpindi, cutting the journey time to just 2 hours and 15 minutes. Currently, the same journey by road or regular train takes much longer.
The Punjab government has signed a formal agreement (MoU) with Pakistan Railways to launch both fast and local train services across the province. The agreement was signed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi.
According to the plan, eight new local train routes will also be introduced, covering a total distance of 1,415 kilometres across 20 districts of Punjab. These routes will connect major cities and towns, including Sialkot, Faisalabad, Sargodha, and several areas in southern Punjab.
This new rail network is expected to benefit nearly 90 million people living in Punjab by providing faster, safer, and more affordable travel options. It will improve connectivity between cities, help students, businessmen, and daily commuters, and reduce pressure on roads.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the project is part of her government’s vision to modernize public transport and provide better facilities to the people of Punjab.
Work on the project is expected to begin soon, with the Lahore-Rawalpindi fast train service likely to start in the coming months.
