FBR Faces Massive Rs. 190 Billion Tax Collection Shortfall in May 2026

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is struggling with a big revenue gap in May 2026. According to recent reports, the tax authority has collected only around Rs. 960 billion so far against a monthly target of Rs. 1.15 trillion. This leaves a shortfall of nearly Rs. 190 billion even as the month comes to an end.

Sources say some extra collections are still expected on the last day, possibly taking the total to Rs. 965 billion. However, this will not be enough to meet the target. The weak performance in May adds to the pressure on the overall fiscal year targets.

For the period from July to May 2025-26, FBR has collected Rs. 11.227 trillion against a revised target of Rs. 12.095 trillion. This means a cumulative shortfall of around Rs. 868 billion so far. The situation is difficult because the government needs to collect a massive Rs. 2.752 trillion in June alone to meet the full-year revised goal.

Experts believe slow economic activity, lower imports, and delays in refunds are some reasons behind the poor collection. This shortfall is expected to increase challenges for the upcoming federal budget. The government may need to take tough steps like new taxes or spending cuts to control the budget deficit.
