Punjab Proposes up to 3 Years Jail Time and Heavy Fines for Al Deep fakes of Artists

The Government of Punjab has prepared the Punjab Performers’ Digital Identity and AI Protection Act 2026, a major step aimed at protecting artists and performers from the misuse of artificial intelligence. The proposed legislation focuses on preventing the unauthorized use of a performer’s voice, facial features, and digital identity, addressing growing concerns over AI-generated manipulation in the entertainment industry.

Under the draft law, creating deepfakes, cloning voices, producing fake endorsements, or generating any digital content using a performer’s likeness without their consent will be considered illegal. Producers and content creators will be legally required to obtain clear written permission before using AI tools and must openly disclose any AI involvement in films, advertisements, or other productions.

The law also introduces strict penalties for violations, including imprisonment of up to three years along with substantial fines. In addition, the proposed bill includes the creation of a digital rights registry to formally protect performers’ identities, while also extending special safeguards for minors and deceased artists, with protections remaining valid for up to 25 years after death.
