The Senate Standing Committee on Interior has given unanimous approval to a new bill that will allow dependent children of senators and members of the National Assembly (MNAs) to get blue official passports. The Members of Parliament Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was presented by Senator Abdul Qadir.
Under the bill, children up to the age of 28 will be eligible for these passports. Blue passports are official documents that provide certain travel facilities and privileges. The bill now moves to the next stage in the parliamentary process for further approval.
During the committee meeting, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry raised some concerns. He said that expanding the use of blue and diplomatic passports needs careful thought. “We must consider the implications for Pakistan’s passport ranking,” he cautioned, pointing to possible misuse of these privileges.
Blue passports are usually given to government officials and their families for official work. This amendment aims to extend the benefit to lawmakers’ children for a longer period.
The decision has sparked debate about fairness and the need to control passport privileges. If passed into law, it could affect how Pakistan manages its official travel documents.
