FIFA is considering another major expansion of the men’s World Cup, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirming that a proposal to increase the tournament from 48 to 64 teams for the 2030 edition will be officially reviewed.
If approved, the move would make the 2030 FIFA World Cup the largest in the competition’s history, giving more nations the opportunity to qualify and compete on football’s biggest stage.
Supporters of the proposal believe it would promote greater global representation and help emerging football nations gain valuable international experience.
However, the idea has also sparked widespread debate among football stakeholders. Critics have raised concerns about an increasingly crowded international calendar, the impact on player workload, longer tournament duration, qualification formats, and whether expanding the field further could affect the overall quality and competitiveness of the World Cup.
FIFA is expected to evaluate the proposal before making a final decision on the tournament’s format.
