The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for possible glacial floods and landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a new spell of monsoon rain is expected to continue through Monday.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), heavy rainfall combined with rising temperatures has increased the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). These floods can occur when lakes formed by melting glaciers suddenly burst, releasing large amounts of water into nearby rivers and valleys.
Officials have warned that flash floods may occur, especially in low-lying areas, near rivers, streams, and mountainous regions. Landslides are also possible in hilly areas where continuous rainfall can weaken the soil and block roads.
The NDMA has advised residents living in vulnerable areas to remain alert and closely follow weather updates and official safety instructions. People have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, particularly in flood-prone and mountainous regions.
Local authorities and emergency response teams have been directed to stay prepared for any possible emergencies. Rescue agencies are monitoring the situation and are ready to respond if flooding or landslides occur.
The PMD has also encouraged tourists visiting northern Pakistan to check weather and road conditions before travelling. Drivers have been advised to be extra careful on mountain roads, where heavy rain can reduce visibility and increase the risk of accidents.
Officials say early precautions can help reduce the impact of severe weather and protect lives and property. Residents are encouraged to move to safer places if instructed by local authorities and to report any emergency situations immediately.
The NDMA and PMD will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide regular updates as the monsoon system moves across northern Pakistan. People are advised to stay informed and take all necessary safety measures until the weather improves.
