Pakistan has achieved a proud moment in science. Hassan Atif Cheema won a silver medal at the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026 held in Vilnius, Lithuania, from July 12 to 19.
The competition brought together more than 300 students from around 78 countries. Young scientists faced tough theory and practical exams in biology. These tests check deep understanding, problem-solving skills, and lab abilities, not just book knowledge.
Hassan Atif Cheema, from International School Lahore (Legacy Campus), won the silver for his outstanding performance. Another Pakistani student, Muhammad Mutahir from Karachi Grammar School, earned a Merit Certificate. This shows the growing strength of Pakistan’s young talent.
The students were chosen through the STEM Careers Program, a joint effort by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS). They received special training at places like the National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE).
Pakistan started joining the IBO regularly from 2006. This silver medal adds to the country’s progress in international science contests. It highlights the hard work of students, teachers, and the support from national programs. Such wins inspire more young Pakistanis to pursue careers in biology and other sciences.
