The federal government is preparing to present the National Flood Protection Plan to the Council of Common Interests (CCI) for approval. The plan carries an estimated cost of around Rs700 billion.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal shared the details while launching the Ministry’s Monthly Development Update for July 2026. He said the plan will strengthen Pakistan’s ability to handle floods through major protective infrastructure. The federal government and the provinces will share the cost equally.
The National Flood Protection Plan was first approved by the CCI in 2017. It was designed to reduce the damage from future floods, improve disaster preparedness, and protect communities that face climate-related risks. Implementation had been delayed mainly due to funding issues. After the severe floods of recent years, the government has brought the plan forward again.
The initiative focuses on building stronger embankments, improving early warning systems, and creating better protection for homes, farmland, and roads. Officials hope the equal cost-sharing between the centre and provinces will help move the projects forward quickly.
Once approved by the CCI, the plan is expected to offer long-term safety to millions of people living in flood-prone areas across the country.
