Pakistan and Iran have reaffirmed their commitment to raise bilateral trade to $10 billion. The pledge was made during the 10th Pak-Iran Joint Trade Committee meeting held in Islamabad.
The meeting was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and Iran’s Industry, Mine and Trade Minister Mohammad Atabak. Both sides agreed to speed up work on the long-awaited Free Trade Agreement. They also discussed better border logistics, joint border markets, and easier cargo movement.
Iran showed interest in using Karachi and Gwadar ports for regional trade and logistics. Officials also explored opportunities in electricity trade and stronger customs cooperation. Recent steps include new customs stations, transit routes, and formal border trade arrangements.
Jam Kamal Khan said the time has come to turn the two countries’ historic friendship into a strong economic partnership. He stressed that the private sector is ready, and governments must create a reliable business environment.
Iranian Minister Atabak described Pakistan as a long-term strategic trade partner. He expressed hope that the Free Trade Agreement would be finalised soon.
