More than 20 million pilgrims have gathered in the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, for Arbaeen 2026. This is one of the largest annual religious events in the world.
Arbaeen marks the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Devotees from Iraq and many other countries join the pilgrimage to honour his sacrifice.
Millions walk the traditional route from Najaf to Karbala, covering about 80 kilometres. Volunteers set up free food, water, and rest stations along the way to support the travellers.
Iraqi officials expected over 20 million participants this year, including several million from abroad. The gathering continues despite regional challenges, demonstrating the pilgrims’ deep faith and unity.
