The government has ordered nationwide testing of loose edible oil, ghee and milk after laboratory tests raised concerns about the quality and safety of some food products available in the market.
Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has directed provincial authorities and relevant regulatory bodies to carry out a detailed survey of unpackaged food products across Pakistan. The move is aimed at checking whether commonly used food items meet the required national quality and safety standards.
As part of the assessment, authorities examined different food products, including banaspati ghee, cooking oil, packaged milk and milk powder. Laboratory testing showed that 176 out of 491 packaged samples did not meet the required national standards. This means around 36 percent of the tested samples failed to meet the quality requirements.
The findings have raised concerns about the quality of food products being sold to consumers. Authorities will now conduct further reviews to better understand the reasons behind the failed test results and determine what action may be needed.
The government is expected to consider regulatory steps based on the results of the assessment. These measures could help improve food quality and ensure that products available in markets meet safety requirements.
