Master Afzal Hussain is remembered as one of the lesser-known people who played a role in the early history of Pakistan’s national flag.
Historical accounts state that Afzal Hussain and his younger brother, Altaf Hussain, stitched the first Pakistani flag in June 1947, just weeks before the country gained independence. The flag itself was designed by Ameer-ud-din Qudwai.
Afzal Hussain was also associated with the Pakistan Movement and later moved from Delhi to Karachi after the creation of Pakistan. Despite his contribution, he lived a simple and modest life and remained largely away from public attention.
His role in the making of the first national flag was later highlighted by Hakim Mohammad Saeed, helping bring his story to a wider audience.
In 1979, General Zia-ul-Haq announced that Afzal Hussain would receive the Pride of Performance award in recognition of his contribution. However, he passed away in 1987 before he could receive the honour.
His story remains a reminder of the many individuals whose efforts helped shape Pakistan but whose names are not widely remembered today. As the national flag continues to represent Pakistan around the world, the contribution of people like Afzal Hussain remains an important part of the country’s early history.
