PS5 Owners Just Declared W@r on Sony, Boycott Against Ending Physical Discs

Sony announced in July 2026 that it will stop making physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028. After that date, new titles will only come in digital form through the PlayStation Store or retail download codes. Existing games released before 2028 can still get disc reprints.

Many PS5 owners are unhappy. They worry about losing true ownership, the ability to resell or lend games, and long-term game preservation. A petition called “Don’t Kill the Disc” has gathered over 350,000 signatures.

In response, a group led by the game preservation community Does It Play has launched #PSBlackout. From August 23 to August 30, 2026, fans are asked to power off their consoles, log out of PlayStation Network, and buy nothing on Sony platforms for one full week.

Sony has said it will continue with the plan. Company leaders note that most players already prefer digital games and believe the change will not hurt sales. Still, the blackout shows how strongly some fans want physical discs to stay.
