China Designs Flying-Wing Aircraft 1.6 Times Wider Than B-2 Bomber, Could Carry Over 800 Passengers

China has presented a futuristic passenger aircraft concept that could carry more than 800 people, potentially offering a capacity beyond that of the world’s largest commercial airliners.

The concept has been developed by the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Centre (CARDC) as part of research into alternative aircraft designs. Rather than following the traditional aircraft shape, the proposed plane uses a wide flying-wing structure.

The aircraft is expected to measure about 85 metres across and around 43 metres in length. Its wingspan would be roughly 1.6 times wider than that of the B-2 Spirit, giving an idea of the enormous scale of the proposed design.

A flying-wing aircraft combines the main body, wings and tail into a single broad structure. This configuration can reduce some of the aerodynamic limitations found in conventional aircraft and could potentially improve efficiency by generating lift across a larger surface.

The concept is part of ongoing research rather than a confirmed commercial aircraft programme. Researchers are expected to study its performance through wind-tunnel experiments and computer-based simulations before any decision could be made about further development.

If such a design were eventually developed for passenger use, it could offer a very different approach to high-capacity air travel. Its large structure could provide space for hundreds of passengers while its aerodynamic design could potentially support more efficient flight.

However, major technical challenges would need to be addressed before a flying-wing passenger aircraft could become commercially viable. These could include passenger safety, airport compatibility, cabin design, flight control and large-scale manufacturing.

For now, the Chinese project remains a research concept, but it demonstrates continued interest in developing unconventional aircraft designs that could shape the future of commercial aviation.
