Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement sends a clear message of unity and peace across the region.
The agreement was signed on August 7, 2026, at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It establishes that an armed attack on any one of the three countries will be treated as an attack on all. Officials have described the pact as purely defensive and aimed at strengthening collective deterrence and regional stability.
The prime minister has underlined that the accord promotes peace, security and prosperity rather than confrontation, and reflects long-standing ties among the three nations.
Separately, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman told parliament on Thursday that Dhaka would positively consider joining the pact if invited by the existing members. He noted that any decision depends on the intention of the parties involved.
The agreement builds on an earlier bilateral defence understanding between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. It also reflects the long-standing ties and shared commitment of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye to protect their sovereignty through collective measures in line with international law.
