The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved a new programme to provide free electric scooters to eligible girl students and working women, with the first phase starting in Peshawar.
The initiative is designed to make daily travel easier for women who need reliable transportation to reach educational institutions and workplaces. By providing electric scooters at no cost, the government aims to improve mobility and give more women greater independence in their daily commutes.
Beneficiaries in the initial phase will be selected through computerised balloting. The process is intended to ensure that eligible applicants have a fair opportunity to receive the scooters.
The programme is also being linked to environmental goals, as electric scooters can provide an alternative to conventional fuel-powered motorcycles and help reduce emissions.
Better access to transportation could make it easier for women to continue their education, reach employment opportunities and participate more actively in the economy.
The first phase will focus on Peshawar, while the government plans to extend the programme to other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the next stage.
The initiative could provide practical support to women who face transportation challenges, particularly those travelling regularly for studies or work.
By combining women’s mobility with cleaner transportation, the programme is expected to address both social and environmental priorities.
