Japan has agreed to provide Pakistan with a grant of around $16.4 million to strengthen flood protection infrastructure in Sindh. The agreement was signed in Islamabad on September 7 under the “Project for Flood Protection and Dike Improvement on Indus River in Sindh Province.”
The grant, worth 2.58 billion Japanese yen, will mainly be used to improve and strengthen the Old Abad Bund in Larkana, located along the right bank of the Indus River. The project is aimed at improving protection for communities living in areas that face regular flood risks.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs signed the agreements with Japanese officials, while the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will also support the project.
Officials from Pakistan appreciated Japan’s continued development assistance and technical support. Japanese Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi also reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to working with Pakistan.
The project is expected to improve flood resilience in Sindh and strengthen protection against future flooding.
