The nomination of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial for the Hilal-i-Imtiaz has come under criticism from senators. The issue was raised during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior, where lawmakers questioned the decision in light of alleged financial irregularities at the tax authority.
Senator Saifullah Abro claimed that irregularities worth around Rs. 1,100 billion had been identified during Langrial’s tenure. He questioned how senior FBR officials connected with the department could be considered for national awards while concerns about the alleged losses were still being discussed.
Langrial is among four FBR officials reportedly recommended for civil awards this year. The FBR has previously said his nomination recognises his work on tax reforms and changes within the revenue system.
The Rs. 1,100 billion figure is an allegation raised by the senator and does not, by itself, establish that the FBR chairman committed corruption. Any responsibility would need to be determined through a formal investigation or legal process.
