Islamabad Police has received 50 electric vehicles as part of a new effort to modernise policing and improve security in the capital. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif handed over the vehicles to the police during a ceremony in Islamabad on September 8.
The vehicles will be used by the newly established Capital Patrol force, which will have 200 police personnel. Each patrol unit will include a male and a female officer, while motorcycle riders will also be deployed to support faster response and patrolling in different areas.
Capital Patrol officers will also wear body cameras while on duty. The cameras are expected to help record interactions with citizens and improve transparency, monitoring and accountability.
The electric vehicles are part of the government’s green policing plan. Officials estimate they could save around Rs34 million in fuel costs every month. The government also expects the vehicles to reduce fuel use and the environmental impact of police operations.
