At least 10 Nepali climbers and mountain guides are missing after an avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Peak in Nepal’s Himalayas on Sunday morning, raising concerns for the safety of those caught in the incident.
The 7,126-metre Himlung Peak is located in Nepal’s remote Manaslu region, close to the Tibet border. The area had experienced several days of heavy snowfall before the avalanche, creating difficult and potentially dangerous conditions for climbers and expedition teams.
According to expedition organiser Bibhuti Chand Thakur, eight members of one expedition team and two members of another are currently unaccounted for. The missing individuals include climbers and guides who were at or near the base camp when the avalanche struck.
Two helicopters and a search-and-rescue team are reportedly on standby, ready to begin operations. However, severe weather and poor conditions have so far prevented rescue teams from reaching the affected area.
Authorities and expedition organisers are closely monitoring the weather, with rescue efforts expected to begin once conditions improve enough to allow helicopters and ground teams to operate safely.
The incident highlights the serious risks faced by climbers in Nepal’s high-altitude regions, particularly during periods of heavy snowfall and unstable mountain conditions.
