W@r-Torn Iran Surprises the World With 52 Asian Games Medals

Iran delivered a strong performance at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, finishing sixth in the overall medal standings with 52 medals. The country secured 19 gold, 18 silver and 15 bronze medals during the competition, which ended on October 4.

Iran’s result attracted attention as the country continues to face serious political and security challenges. Despite these difficulties, its athletes produced notable results across several sports, particularly wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo and volleyball.

The 19 gold medals marked a clear improvement from the 13 golds Iran won at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. Although its total medal count was slightly lower than the previous 54, Iran moved up one position in the rankings.

Women athletes also achieved important milestones. Reyhaneh Karimi won bronze in women’s weightlifting, giving Iran its first Asian Games medal in the sport. Women’s taekwondo also celebrated a historic gold medal.

Iran’s campaign ended with another major success as its men’s volleyball team won gold on the final day.
